Project Overview: Discover Rye Harbour History Group

This project was caried out in partnership with Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The history group undertook a series of classroom and outdoor activities, the latter involving many military sites around the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve.

Description: In May 2022, we set out to clear the build-up of beach shingle from pillbox B7/1 at the harbour mouth, furthest away from the Discovery Centre.

Having cleared out pillbox B7/2 back in 2018, we had a good idea of what was in store as we got to work on its neighbour.

Thanks goes to our team of volunteers who turned out to shovel and barrow several tons of material from inside the pillbox onto the beach outside. The work was hard and hot and by 3pm our wonderful team had completely cleared the floor - perhaps the cleanest the pillbox has been since August 1940!
